Mauriell Somata is a Sea Angel Submatarius researcher working within the Arcane Sciences Division in the Adventurers' Guild as a member of the Staff & Scabbard subdivision.
Appearance
Mauriell stands at a moderately short 147.3 cm and has a rather thin and average build. As a Sea Angel Submatar, they have pale blue skin with coral-colored hair, orange eyes and matching markings, most notably on their cheeks, chest, ends of fingers and toes, and at the ends of rounded horns on their head and small wings on their back. After being corrupted by Whimsy, some of these have begun to shift hue to be slightly pinkish, which is the most visible in his eyes and heart, as well as new circular markings appearing on his arms and legs, typically covered by long gloves and socks.
Her usual attire has her hair styled short and includes a tan shirt with chest and shoulder openings with its sleeves tied, loose blue shorts, matching white thigh-high socks and fingerless elbow-length gloves, as well as a long orange tailcoat and boots.
Personality
Mauriell is a gentle and calmly composed individual with an intense and haphazard curiosity for all things arcane in nature, often willing to push themself into mortal peril for the sake of scientific discovery. He always has a soft, yet blank smiling expression on his face and never changes his lighthearted demeanor, talking in nonsensical metaphors, unfazed by even the most serious of moments. This extends to her opinion on Whimsy and even her own corruption as well, being rather open about its various physical and mental consequences despite the stigma and pressure it places on her.
Biography
Mauriell was born and raised in one of the cities in The Reef of Umito, into a large family of mostly Sea Angel Submatarius known for their creative, particularly musical, endeavors. While Mauriell was taught how to sing as a child and did occasionally appear alongside their family during festival performances, it did very little to sway them from their passion for Aether, always playing around with the few spells he knew and aspiring to become a spellweaver once they were older. Between his studies of Aether and family business, he often wandered through the oceans to cool him off whenever overwhelmed, leading to one occasion as a teenager coming across the island of Lazlø. She was immediately intrigued by her new sensations in the water and swam onto the land to investigate, finding the entirety of the place and experience as a unique kind of beautiful that she had never experienced before. They explored for several hours until a throbbing headache began to build, and they turned to return home, only able to make it back to their family barely conscious by singing a simple melody. Taken into care immediately, it was found that he had been Corrupted by the island's Whimsy and was forever changed by its effects.
Mauriell though, found only further drive through this experience and continued with her plans to become a spellweaver, moving to Eversun to join its Guild despite everything, ending up in the Staff & Scabbard subdivision of the Arcane Sciences Division. In the 90 or so years since then, their corruption has been quite slow physically, much to their disappointment.

Mauriell's skillset is primarily made up with the usage of bubbles made from Water Aether, serving primarily as a very physically weak support.
Remedial Bubbles (Water)
A spell woven by Mauriell themself over years of study. This spell creates bubbles that are capable of healing wounds and partially steadying the mind when touched and popped.
Bubble Construct (Water)
One of the earliest spells Mauriell learned as a child. This spell creates bubbles that simply replicate the functionality of naturally occurring bubbles of water, often used by Mauriell for more efficient and fun movement.

Mauriell connects with Monica after her Whimsy corruption is made known to the public during Phoenix Fest 1230. They offer to help Monica learn how to control her powers due to their knowledge on the subject, though Mauriell’s usual cheery demeanor regarding it is quite offputting to Monica.
Events
Phoenix Fest 1230
As part of the Arcane Science Division, Mauriell's contributions to Phoenix Fest 1230 were rather minimal. Most of their time was spent on demonstrations about Fire Aether, simply teaching others about the element and its properties. However, during his off hours, he often stopped by Eleanor Valentine's stand of knick-knacks for guidance, trinkets, and to deliver her some treats from Bunny Burrows's Sugar Cube caravan, which he himself frequented due his love for sweets and to try the CinnaBomb being sold. She insisted she tried it "for the sake of science", but the free daily sweets being offered to whoever could stomach it tells a different story. Mauriell was also recruited by Tia Alequin into a party to hunt a aether-charged boar for her Grand Bonfire Feast during the festival, with this sparking a dormant desire for adventure within her. As a healer, they tried their best to assist their party members and were paid handsomely for their efforts, taking a few sliced of the smoked meat home once prepared, as well as getting a single smooch from Tia herself.
Gourdfest 1230 / The Stageplay of Frights
Mauriell celebrated Gourdfest as they do every year, dressing up as an Ice Spirit due to their staunch beliefs in their existence. During the holiday, he attended the Kalebass Olli clashes, participating in its rhyming chants, and the Gourdfest Masquerade hosted by The Radiant Eagle family, participating in its open mic with some whimsical hymns.
Later in the holiday, she made the decision to join a call for adventurers heading into a Pitfall-level Dungeon in Alula, having been recruited by Selena Idris of the Wayfarers Division. They traveled alongside her, Astrophel Argentum, Hyalt Keylen, Jaina Ryder, Ruairi Cromwell in a carriage, singing together and being acquainted before arriving at Alula and heading into the dungeon a few days later. After getting his ticket from the mysterious ticket stand and the dungeon's path splits, he headed into the puzzling Hall of Comedy, followed only by Hyalt and Meridian Synastra, where Meridian performed a soliloquy, he pied a crying shadowy actor and started a pie fight, and Hyalt broke open an hourglass containing the rest of the actor with her arrows and claiming the Mask of Comedy.
Rejoining with the rest of the party from the Hall of Tragedy as well as emergency newcomers, Mauriell acts as support for those attacking the playwright, trying her best to keep up with how many people were present and already wounded from their hallway. After a combined attack with Hyalt, Jaina was knocked unconscious, and being led by Iris Opalina, Mauriell and Pendra attempt to bring her to safety, before Astrophel tears through them in a blinded rage, cutting through Mauriell's efforts and severely wounding them. All while this is happening, the stage has caught fire due to Selena and Ruairi's Fire Aether, and Meridian briefly caught the attention of the playwright with her attempt at an audition, but got too frightened to finish it, causing the playwright to scatter its papers all over the stage. One paper floats its way to Mauriell, designating a role for the "hero", and despite his hesitation, confusion, and injuries, he pushes himself onto the flaming stage, resisting Jun'ichi Nogami's attempts to restrain him down. Handed the Mask of Comedy by Hyalt and the Mask of Tragedy by Nivian, who freezes the stage's broken floorboards for them, Mauriell puts on the masks, being healed up by Eleanor Valentine. She performs on the ice, dancing and singing a song from her childhood, one sung in her childhood choir about the change of seasons. The performance... exhausts them, and with only a moment of peace afterwards, they quickly fall unconscious just before Leo Eridanus gets in the finishing blow.
He recovered outside and immediately report to Hanzekihel Oulieus, despite his insistence that he rest fully, visited by Hyalt and visiting Papa Keali's stand for sustenance and hydration. Through the week, she tried to celebrate Alula's Whisperween as much as she can with how little energy she has, primarily found in the theatre area and only spectating rather than joining in, once meeting with Ruairi and reassuring him of his ability to learn from his actions. However, something about them has felt rather off ever since the dungeon...
Trivia
- One of their most notable traits is the melody constantly playing in their head, which they can often be found humming idly. This melody is one they've known since childhood.
- His wings are not large enough to be able to properly fly, and instead Mauriell may simply float and hover around with them. The wings themselves also tend to flutter whenever Mauriell's curiosity is piqued.
- Even though she only uses Water and Whimsy Aether herself, she does have a decent knowledge of all non-Chaotic types of Aether construction from her research.
- They tend to like all types of sweets but have a significant distaste for anything remotely bitter.
- He has a soft spot for children and cares deeply for them, but tries to keep his distance from them due to his corruption, seemingly one of the only things that makes him consider its risks.
