Helia Argoss is a fire Dragon native to Eversun City currently working in the Arcane Sciences Division, particularly in the Magitech subdivision.

Appearance

A fire Dragon with a color palette reminiscent of the Glimmer season changing into Auburn. She stands at average height, but with a frailer frame. Her hair is long, down to her lower back, that fades from a darker red to a orange-yellow at the tips. A chunk of bangs covers her right eye, and her eyes gleam with the fiery hue of rubies. She's typically dressed in business-casual wear; a collared shirt with a tie and pleated skirt to match, and a lab coat resting over her shoulders. She has fairly thin wings, curved horns, and a long, slim tail that is decorated by jade beads.

Personality

Kind, gentle-natured, and generally quiet. Helia is someone who keeps to herself but has a fantastic relationship with any of her colleagues that speak with her. She isn’t necessarily shy or timid, but her demeanor is pleasant to be around. Always looking at the positive side of situations and outcomes, she finds value in everything that crosses her path. She heavily believes in the idea that everything happens for a reason, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with it. She also has the habit of shutting herself indoors for most hours of the sunlight, even on her days off. She’s just very passionate about her research!

Biography

Helia is a fire dragon that comes from a family of two male Dragons, one fire and one dark. Her fathers are from Lyrrh al Stahl, both fallen, and she was born on the surface in Eversun City. At the age of ten, she was diagnosed with a debilitating type of aether sickness only found rarely in surface-born Dragons, which causes her aether gland to work overtime attempting to overproduce aether within the body. The aether gland begins to stress out other internal processes and they want to work overtime too, which then causes her to have some symptoms such as heart arrhythmia, trouble breathing, and dizzy spells/fainting. The condition is due to the atmosphere on Castrella’s surface having lower levels of aether, but Dragons are still born with the innate bodily expectation of being completely submerged in a dense ocean of aether. While fallen Dragons experience a type of aether sickness similar to this condition when arriving on the surface, they’re typically able to bounce back and adapt to this new environment. She also cannot use magic very well, which normally for a Dragon, would be a large blow to their pride. Her fathers were very supportive, though, and did not pressure Helia to place a lot of her value on her aetheric abilities despite their origins from Lyrrh al Stahl. With a lot of support from Guild doctors, they were able to secure medications to provide Helia with a good quality of life growing up. Sometimes she still cannot stay up and about for very long, especially outdoors, but it doesn’t bother her much.

Helia enrolled in the Adventurers’ Guild with the intentions to study more on aether sickness conditions and help others who experience similar ones to hers, working for the Contingency Division for about five years. She was then offered to transfer to the Arcane Sciences Division, particularly in the Magitech subdivision after some extra courses in the Education Division Academy. When she learned about the basis of Magitech—and the whole group of researchers dedicated to improving people’s lives that cannot use magic—she fell in love immediately. She felt like she could help better here and learn more about magic and aether. Later into her career she was asked to assist with the development of communicators thanks to her brilliant mind and dedication. While this wasn’t exactly her exact ideal project to be on, she still accepted, and spent several years attempting to perfect the short-range communicator we have today. This research spurred her into attempting to develop a long-range communication device from the blueprints, thus the idea of a radio came into view. A great way to relay announcements to the public with a single click of a button will certainly help everyone keep in touch with the state of affairs regarding the world they live in. Helia’s gentle, amicable, and sunny personality ended up having her nominated for being the “voice for the people,” that way headmasters and management can submit their announcements for the completed radio station to Helia and have her speak about them without taking time out of their busy schedules to do so themselves. This posed a problem, though: Helia didn’t really want to be a public icon, so she went out of her way to hire the Creative Commons Division members to assist her in creating an “alter ego” for her to wear during her radio casting. The CCD ended up having a little too much fun with this project, creating a character called Lunya Dusk that’s a half-purrtome, half-dragon girl with a penchant for cat puns and an energetic disposition. Unsure if the alter ego’s personality was something Helia could handle, she gave it her best shot as the Adventurers’ Guild radio caster, and the general public’s reception of her was nothing short of infatuation.

Lunya Dusk’s career has been going strong for a few years now, gaining popularity and now being used and commissioned for advertisement, meet and greets, sponsorships, and anything that would want her likeness to be used in a public setting. No one outside of Helia’s close colleagues and friends know she is the woman behind the radio, and she would much rather keep it this way. Just simply knowing she can bring some ease and consistency to all walks of life by adopting this (slightly tiring) personality means the world to her. Not only that, but she can continue to be part of the Magitech subdivision and work on the technology that can assist others like her. And thanks to her lifespan as a Dragon, she can work for centuries upon centuries to see a world where Magitech is commonplace.

Abilities

Helia, despite being a Dragon, does not have a stable grip on her aether. She can cast magic but at the very basic "light a fire at the fingertip" level. Anything else will cause her physical pain.

Trivia

  • She has a seven year old daughter named Nemesia, nicknamed Nem or Nemmy—just a single mom doing her thing.
  • She can technically use magic but it pains her to do so. She has no real reason to.
  • When Nemesia isn’t in school and Helia still has to work, she’ll drop them off at the Valhalla Project Landing.
  • Takes specially made aetheric supplements to keep her health in check when radio casting. Even if she’s sitting the entire time, it’s a lot of talking and energy.
  • Despite having a purrtome mascot, she actually doesn’t have any attachment towards one. Probably has a pet caudam? Maybe keeps fish.
