The Valhalla Project is the name given to an unregistered reconstruction project located in the northwestern slums of Eversun City, starting in 1220. This reconstruction project aims to create a livable district for residents affected by a horrific fire in the year of 1209 and is operated by two orphans majorly affected by the blaze itself, Odin Finch and Korin Altair. While all sanctuaries for children, animals, and everything in between require a license provided by the Adventurers’ Guild so they can receive sanctioning, support, and provide taxes, Odin and Korin are wholly avoiding bringing attention to the Guild in order to prove residents can provide a better quality of life than the Guild can offer in their governmental authority. It spans the entire sector in the northeast portion of Eversun City, including several residential neighborhoods, a recreational section, and a business section.

Premise

"This is something we can do. Something we can build up together in her honor. It's what she would've done, so why can't we do that for her?" - Odin Finch, 1220

The main goal of the Valhalla Project involves rebuilding collapsed buildings, providing food for the hungry and unemployed, and assisting children in their growth and education. While Odin works herself to the bone to exploit the Guild’s capital and donates a large portion of her paychecks to the project (somewhere around 90%), Korin has secured protection of the sector by working for Mirage. As of the current year of 1230, the sector is halfway rebuilt. However, as more construction occurs and the sector becomes busier, the higher their notoriety rises, and the strict timer begins counting down until they are eventually noticed by the Civil Affairs Division.

At first, the Valhalla Project began as a small sanctuary for the homeless and orphaned kids of all ages running around the slums that have escaped the hands of those attempt to register them into Guild-sanctioned orphanages. In the 11 year downtime after the fire, a lot of families got sick, moved away, or escaped the destroyed part of town very selfishly, sometimes even leaving their children behind. Some adults still wanting to stay or were forced to stay in this time were able to live out of the rubble and surviving houses, pooling some efforts into clearing out major piles of debris, but these efforts were not much.

As the founders and leaders of the project, Odin and Korin internally manage EVERYTHING alone. The list of labors include finding and hiring contractors willing to avoid the guild, financial budgets, construction schedules, resource distribution (food/water), cleaning and layout planning, etc. Since they are alone and inexperienced in this type of management, especially since the project started when they were very young (age 19 & 23), progress was incredulously slow in the first five years. Now with the assistance of Odin's connections in the Adventurers' Guild, work has sped up exponentially.

Valhalla Project Orphanage

The orphanage shelter itself does not have a proper name, often just being called "the orphanage" or "the shelter." The orphanage has been and always will be the top priority; It was constructed in the first two years of the project start, and has been semi-successfully running since then which has allowed some kids to grow up and leave on their own. It has a proper building nestled in the back of the residential area of the project area. Around 25 children and teenagers are living under Odin and Korin's care.

While they are both unable to visit the orphanage every day, there are dedicated caretaker adults who work and assist where they can, as well as some contributors met through the Adventurers' Guild that wanted to volunteer and assist the project progress. The siblings always dedicate their free time on the weekends to the orphanage together. When Odin's excursions take her past the weekend, Korin stays an extra day in Eversun to cover lack of labor.

The orphanage is always expanding. If either of the siblings encounter an orphan, whether it be in Eversun or outside nearby, they will quite literally swipe them up and bring them to the shelter. This mimics Micaiah Finch's behavior towards Odin and Korin, and they believe that by forwarding her acts of kindness, they live out her assumed desire and memories.

The orphanage is where the siblings pour their heart and soul into in their entirety. Everything they do is for the children, all of their little siblings that adore them. The children from the orphanage have been such a staple to the project that nowadays, it's near impossible to not run into one of them out and about, playing in the residential area or Harper Park. Some children have imprinted on the volunteers they like the most...

Other Locations

The Morning Roost

The Morning Roost is the first public facility constructed entirely from scratch, and not from an existing floor plan prior to the fire. It is, by technicalities, owned by Odin and Korin, but operated by Lianne Fennick, another orphan affected by the fire. It is a cafe-bookstore joint location that Lianne runs by herself most of the time, but also provides work opportunities for the older teenagers of the orphanage in order to reinforce adult responsibilities and provide them an allowance for their own spending. This store is directly at the front of the district perimeters, facing the Hearth, and will always be the first facility encountered when visiting the project area.

Harper Park

Harper Park is a large, circular open field in the middle of the project area. Named after the large harperberry tree in the center, it is a lush green park with many flowerbeds, bushes, small animals, and playground equipment for kids to play on. It was constructed as a memorial to Micaiah, as she was always seen snacking on harperberries. Harper Park is also where Odin, Korin, and other volunteers assisting with the project host mini-festivals for the orphanage kids during the holiday seasons. They can't possibly take all of them out to the Theater District at once, so they try their best to bring the festivities to the project themselves. Thanks to several contributors working in the Creative Commons Division, the festivals have only grown in scale since the first attemps.

Private Education Center

The next priority for the rebuilding is to provide a private education center for the orphanage kids.

Observatory

A recreational facility planned for the future.

Contributors

A wide array of donors have funded the project directly through its two founders, willing to sneak beneath the Guild’s omnipotent eye to assist those in need. While these remain anonymous to everyone not involved in the project, Odin and Korin do keep a list of names and what they provide to the project in order to make sure they're spreading labor evenly.
