The Morning Roost is a coffee shop and bookstore hybrid business that sits at the very entrance of the Valhalla Project’s neighborhood sector. It acts as a place of respite for residents of the sector as well as any contributor to the project or any passersby who know of its existence. Since the Valhalla Project’s sector is deeply nestled in the furthest part within Eversun City, it is not that notorious of a location to the public eye. Thanks to this convenience, the business is able to keep low while still remaining a popular space to visit.

Its hours of business are 06:00 to 22:00. The business is not formally open on weekends but regular patrons can still visit its proprietress if discussed prior to the date.

Functions

Residential

The main proprietress of the Morning Roost is a very young Lesser fox Kindred woman by the name of Lianne Fennick. She was hired personally by Odin and Korin after they completed the building’s construction, and now lives within a personal residential loft on the second floor of the building. She cares for the Morning Roost deeply, and that care is reflected in her utmost devotion to her position. Lianne works the full 16 hours every weekday, but during slow hours, she allows the teenagers to run the business while she relaxes upstairs.

Book Exchange

The cafe is divided into two portions: the cafe lobby and the small bookshop nook. There is a small reading corner nestled within bookshelf walls where customers can come sit and read completely for free (though one may be pestered to purchase a drink or snack to support the business), request a certain book be available, rent out books like a library, or bring in their own book to permanently exchange for another within the shelves. There is no time limit to read within the Morning Roost walls, but book rentals do have a return date (one month from checkout).

Coffee Shop

The cafe lobby takes up the majority of the building for tables and chairs. There are booths and regular tables, as well as stools at the main counter much like a bar. Lianne is not the only employee working the cafe counter; the older teenagers from the Valhalla Project’s orphanage can typically be met behind the counter to assist customers and earn a small income on their own. The coffee counter takes custom orders for drinks only, but also offers small pastries and snacks. Lianne claims she bakes everything herself and lets the orphans help, but no one really knows.

Book Club

There’s a closed-off room behind the coffee shop that welcomes certain patrons to discuss group reading material. Thankfully, it seems the room is fairly soundproof, as the group can get fairly rowdy during discussions. Lianne partakes in the book club herself between serving patrons, but she typically leaves them alone. She’s getting paid for the room rental, so she doesn’t quite care what they’re doing in there as long as the rent is paid.

Theming

The Morning Roost is themed after avians. It was constructed in dedication to Micaiah Aquila, the sector’s community leader who sacrificed her life to ensure survivability for the residents. The cafe walls are built entirely from brick with lots of natural light and wall-height windows. Lots of little drawings of birds made by the orphans can be found on various chalkboards littered around the building, and the cafe’s special menu drinks are all named after avian species.
