Born in a rural farming village and dissatisfied with the prospect of a pastoral life, James ran away from home at 16 in search of adventure. One of his more ambitious expeditions sent him further west towards the island of Machina, where the atmospheric Law corruption quickly eroded both his confidence and his body. On the brink of death, James happened to be discovered by wandering Automatons, who escorted him back to their settlement and used their own version of medical practices to "fix" his ailments, cutting away the corruption and replacing parts of his organic body with Automaton technology.
